A message was received from the Private Secretary to His Excellency the Governor re the declaration of war.
A. M. The 355 Chinese soldiers interned in the camp were
released to act as First Aid personnel in Hong Kong and Kowloon. 150 acted as stretcher bearers under the Director of Medical Services' control in Kow- loon and 205 were escorted by Police to North Police Refugee Camp. Police guard was withdrawn. The camp had previously been bombed without casual- ties, an unexploded bomb dropping in close proxi- mity.

tor, one Indian Police Constable and one Chinese detective were sent to Customs Pass, Sha Tin Gap, Shing Mun Cross Roads and Tai Wai to act as liai- son officers with the Military.

Sandbagging of Vital Posts and Dispersal points began. Arrangements for rations including impro- visation of kitchens had to be made and cooking utensils provided.
The general duties of the Police Force during the war in their main responsibility of maintaining Internal Security were as follows:- Police provided guards for all vital posts and food control cen- tres, rice queues had to be controlled, patrols and picquets were sent out to maintain general order, Other duties were enforcement of the black out regulations, prevention of 5th Column activities and control of A. R. P. tunnels. Police turned out to fires and demolition of buildings etc. caused by bombs and shells.
On instructions from Senior Superintendent of Police Kowloon, gas proofing and other precautions against gas were commenced in all stations and went on until Kowloon was evacuated. The necessary mater- ials were obtained from A.R. P. stores.
Many Fifth Columnist leaflets were found in the district.
Two Police harbour launches assisted Harbour Office and Naval Authoriti es to clear harbour and approac- hes of native craft.
All Police harbour launches were engaged generally all day on clearing the harbour of all native craft after Yaumati and Causeway Bay typhoon shelters were full, stopping craft bringing passengers over from Kowloon to Hong Kong, and distributing to native craft maps received from the Harbour Master showing prohibited areas to which the craft could not proceed or remain in. All launches from then onwards patrolled entrances to harbour day and night to prevent craft from re-entering the harbour The personnel available in the Guards Office were as follows:-
